The death toll for the massive earthquake in Haiti is estimated to be over 100,000. In the face of such an overwhelming tragedy, you may feel there isn’t much you can do to help, but many small donations put to use by a capable organization can help greatly. In addition to your prayers, please consider giving to help the relief efforts – here are a few links to legitimate organizations that will be there to help:

Maria Percoco Vola, 1964-2001

Maria was an administrative assistant for insurance broker Aon, and was killed in the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.

She is remembered for her compassion, even at an early age – When Maria was 12, she heard of an earthquake in Italy, and went around her neighborhood collecting money to help the victims.

The New York Times reported on October 5, 2001, that her fate was unknown, that her relatives were still searching for her, with hope beyond hope. She had made two phone calls to her sister, Tilly, to tell her about the attack. It was later concluded she died inside the WTC.

A guestbook for Maria can be found at Legacy.com.

This tribute is part of the Project 2996 Initiative. If you have a blog, I would encourage you to sign up to get a name and write a tribute.
